I’ve heard several tidbits about how important LinkedIn is, but this really made it real for me. Nicole Williams, LinkedIn’s career expert, gives advice about what to do and not do to, but what really got my attention was the stats she gave and how to use LinkedIn for networking.

To start, here are the numbers she gave with some tips:

  • Add a picture of yourself
    • Results: 11 times more likely to be viewed
    • The picture should show who you are as a professional and should show your style and persona.
  • Update your status
    • Results: 10 times more likely to be viewed
    • Showing that you are an active member of your professional community
    • Post anything. Something you’ve read or heard, school\work project updates, congratulating someone on something, anything it better than nothing

I had no idea those two things were so important. I knew a picture was so people could recognize you when sending a request, but 11 time more likely. Wow. I’ve never done the status update thing and haven’t really thought much of it until now.

LinkedIn-InBug-2CRevThe next part of the interview that was very beneficial for me was how to use LinkedIn. When going to a conference or other professional event, try to get a roster and look people up on LinkedIn so it will be easier to start a conversation. (Not sure how easy it is to get a roster in the first place.) You can see where they went to school, where they’re from, and other areas where you could have something in common. This will help break the ice and start a meaningful conversation. (BTW, Beyond the to-do list has a great podcast about networking here. I’ll write a post about it later).

There was more to this podcast, but this is the section which stuck out to me.
